From Our Founder
( Aaliyah Strong )
On February 2, 2022, my fiancé (Tyshon “Ty” Ross) was senselessly & fatally shot in front of me, outside of our job. Every moment felt like an eternity, as I clenched onto him helplessly, witnessing life drain from the person I loved to my core. Each gasp wasp was a painful reminder of the fragility and cruelty of life. Losing Ty was a devastating experience that shook me to my core. The initial shock felt surreal. Emotions of disbelief, confusion, anger, and overwhelming sadness flooding my being. Every aspect of my daily routine seemed be tinged with the reminder of my fiancé’s absence. Simple task became monumental challenges , and the most challenging moment was telling my son his stepfather had been killed. My heart broke a thousand times over as I watched his expression trying to understand the reality of what had happened. Little did I know , the days to follow would become even harder. I hadn’t anticipated all of the added layers to grief no one ever talks about.
“ Where would he be buried?” “How will we afford his funeral?” “How will I afford rent?”
Countless questions raced through my mind.
Immediately I began applying for support from all angles. Despite reaching out for support, every door I knocked seemed to shut in my face, leaving me feeling invisible and unheard in my pain. My letters would always read :
“Unfortunately , because you and Ty were not married...”
“Unfortunately, you are not considered next of kin..”
I struggled to make sense of a world that seemed to have turned its back on me in my hour of need. The place we were working at wouldn’t even help. Whether it was navigating complex paperwork, facing long wait times, or being met with indifference, the road to getting help felt like an obstacle course.
In the two months that followed , I received our first eviction notice. The frustration and helplessness I felt was almost unbearable. Shortly there after , my son and I had been evicted ; having to leave the very place that we shared our last precious moments with Ty.
People should not become victims of their own victimization ! While the lack of assistance was a painful reminder of society’s broken systems , it also taught me the importance of standing STRONG in the face of adversity.
I refused to be defeated by this injustice. I quickly felt compelled to speak out about my story and my pain. With each retelling of my story, I found a sense of empowerment in being able to give voice to my grief and to honor Tys memory. By speaking out, I hoped to shed light on the complexities of grief, and to challenge the broken systems so many people have to deal with.
In advocating for myself and others , I found strength in vulnerability. While the journey of healing is ongoing, I made it a mission to inspire hope, promote healing and create positive change for others in their own grief journeys. This is our story. This story birthed TYme to Thrive Beyond Grief.
